We love our community involvement and take part on short excursions out and about. Our children enjoy walks where they can get out and explore locally. We often have our local community join us in Centre for visits and enhance our children’s knowledge about people, places, things and events.
We are very fortunate to have a teacher from Playball New Zealand, visit our centre each Wednesday to take lessons for our children. Playball is a sport and movement programme for our children 2 years and above. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn basic movement development skills and refining sport skills and techniques. Playball is taught in an organised and structured manner similar to a classroom situation. Children are taught to listen to instructions, to observe demonstrations attentively, to concentrate while attempting the skills.
Healthy values and attitudes is also another great benefit that children develop through playball, these can include respect for one another, co-operating well, taking turns, being flexible and being a good sport who can win and lose with dignity.
Plus we are lucky enough to have real grass and such a great outdoor space to be able to facilitate this programme.
Transition to School
At Small Poppies, we often get positive feedback from our parents and teachers from our local Primary Schools about our Extension Programme.
We hold this programme close to our hearts and consider it a real point of difference in our community.
We believe in building a foundation for children to transition to school as confident, capable learners. This programme for our 4 year olds offers structured daily sessions that focus on literacy and numeracy. Teachers cater the lessons to each individual childs needs and build on key skills such as listening and following instructions, being involved, working alongside one another, extending concentration and promoting independence.
To compliment this programme, once a week the children 4 years and above ‘create’ their own lunchbox, which helps further develop independence, self-help skills, as well as time management.
Portfolios & Storypark
We use an awesome app called Storypark, which allows whānau to follow their child’s early learning journey and to ensure you don’t miss out on important centre communications.
Photos, videos and audio capture your child’s learning so you never miss a treasured moment again. You and your family can also feel more engaged in your child’s development, and you decide who you would like to invite to experience your childs learning journey with you. A perfect way to share those special moments with loved ones down the line or overseas.
Although we love to use Storypark as an online platform to communicate with parents, we also use paper portfolios for each child.
Children enjoy finding their paper portfolio and reflecting on their past activities at the centre. It is a fantastic way for children to engage in self-recognition and reflect on their personal development, as well as being a treasured keepsake for their 21st Birthday!
